THE GEOMETRY OF BEING: Part 1

By Robert Gulick

“Eastern art has a mathematical basis.  It is a script with an inner and outer content.  In Persia there is a room in a monastery which makes one weep owing to mathematical combinations of different parts of its architecture.  Real art  is (created through) knowledge not talent”.

                                                                                        G. Gurdjieff

There is an ancient wisdom that is found at the roots of the worlds great mystical traditions that embraced realities both seen and transcendent. It understood the mystery of life and consciousness…it embodied the principles of natural law and the unity and connectedness of existence. This knowledge was encoded into Temples and art, language and music, ritual and social structure creating a Sacred Architecture in the whole fabric of human existence.  Through a Canon of number and geometry, proportion and measure, the man-made world was once a reflection of Universal order and harmony…a Microcosm.  The application of the Laws of Form that relate Mind in Matter generated in symbolic, social and physical environment a formative field which conditioned evolving humanity to higher, more integrated states of being.  Within it a transformation could be achieved, the mind expanded, the emotions balanced and the body healed and made whole.

As modern science validates the ancient wisdom, as it rediscovers these principles of Universal Law and Harmonics and the multi-dimensional nature of reality, as it seeks to understand original cause, a new synthesis is emerging.  It is a sacred science from which principles of design may be developed and re-applied in the context of our modern world to literally re-design culture and create transformative environment…environment that resonates us to perfect states of health, awareness and peace.   In this alchemical architecture, we are again connected to the Spirit that resides in all things…we are related to our planet, joined in our common humanity and unified to the Source of our being and vitality. through these inter-dimensional gateways man takes an evolutionary leap into conscious co-creation and stewardship.  In this sacred ecology society itself becomes a Temple, a Great Pyramid…in which humankind takes an initiation and becomes worthy of claiming the stars.

The theory and practice of this sacred science and the concepts of transformative design develop from the synthesis of the traditions of Sacred Geometry and Geomancy with the theories of consciousness and reality   emerging from the new science.  Metaphors of geometry and number emerge from ancient teachings, mandalas and Temples, as well as in the structures and processes of nature. These provide a framework for understanding Universal Law and Harmonics as a basis to facilitate the conscious attunement of humanity to the shifting patterns of energy, the grids of the planet in the process of evolution and renewal.

Sacred+Architecture: it is the crafting, the embodiment of First Principles into all that man makes in matter, creating environment in such a way that the connection to Spirit-the Higher Intelligence that is behind all manifestation is continually maintained in resonance with the universal patterns.  It is thus environment created through the application of Sacred Geometry…the pattern of higher Intelligence designed into culture to connect to those higher dimensions of being through a sympathetic resonance to the corresponding patterns of those states.  Perhaps more simply sacred architecture is how man projects his divine inner nature into the world he creates around himself in order to maintain the connection in resonance to Source-to higher dimensions that are patterned into the environment.  Sacred Geometry is then simply the pattern of relationship between the Self and the Divine.  The energy is measured in the angle.

To live or design in a sacred way is to acknowledge and connect with Spirit behind all manifestation. It is not to be taken as meaning religious as it is not way of devotion or belief.  Nor is sacred science in opposition to the concept of creation but rather the instruments and principles through which creation occurs.  Sacred should be taken  to mean first that there is a Spirit, an intelligent force or impulse, a creative thought, behind all manifestation, that secondly, there is a link, a connection, between all manifestation (effect) and this Spirit(cause) and thirdly that this connection can be made with full knowledge and conscious intent though the objective application of a wisdom or sacred science or what the ancients called a “wisdom of the heart”.

Sacred  refers to that which is the cause and connection of all things.

In the traditions of the Ancient Wisdom, geometry or form was understood as a fundamental expression of energy, thought or Spirit.  The incorporation of archetypal patterns into architecture, landscape, objects, ritual, language and even social structure could awaken in man an awareness and connection to the corresponding states of being through sympathetic resonance.

There is Spirit in all things, it is pervasive in place and is in evidence in a multitude of ways in the geometry of nature.  The sacred patterns evident at every level of form in nature, in both structure and processes of growth, is what Gregory Bateson called in Mind in Nature the “pattern that connects” noting that the patterns in nature were identical to the definition of Mind.   Patterns of manifestation reflect the presence of Universal Mind…the activity of a creative Intelligence, and becomes a model for understanding the nature of “Spirit of Place” They order time and space, matter and energy, in mathematical form-equations of relationship.   Geometry in nature reveals the formative principles of manifestation…Reality is an effect  of geometry.

A sacred science is emerging form current theories of the field and holographic nature of reality, the mind and living systems and as well an underlying fundamental unity, an implicate order, connecting all things.  Consciousness and emotion, like light and sound, are energy and essentially vibrational in nature. The interaction of energy in substance creates form through resonating field patterns in multi-dimensional time-space. Mind and matter are related through the Laws of Form which govern the archetypal patterns Spirit takes in material expression…the “patterns that connect”.  .

Every state of being from an atom, flower man, and planet to a thought, feeling, dream or even a dimension of existence occupies a characteristic plane of vibrational pattern. In a reality understood as frequency, the activity of light, there is no more separation between fire and earth, Spirit and Matter, than there is between the colors of the rainbow. When all being is form there is no separation between the spiritual and the material. The planes of consciousness are separated only by frequency barriers.  Attunement or connection to a state of being is achieved simply through a sympathetic resonance to the corresponding pattern…the form generated by frequency.

The Laws of Form that relate Mind in matter are an expression in physical density of the more fundamental Universal LMDR’S-Commentariesaws and Harmonics. These are the basics of physical law.  They operate as complimentary aspects, one providing the geometry-the Plan-the essential equations-relationships of principles the other the energetics of light, color and sound…energy, quality and the breath of life.  One is mind-pure idea that orders the other emotion, desire-the power or energy to create. They are natural principles of cosmo-genesis that order the flow and structure of energy from the original unity into separate existence, through all dimensional conditions.  They provide for all potentialities of experience, insuring the maintenance and expression of Source within any form and thus the potential for any individualized aspect to know and return to Source.  Ultimately, it is a universal law that all cosmic creative principle will find the end of its activity through the excess of its effect… Cause reduces to itself all it causes.  In the cyclic operation of Law, all resolves into Source.

“There is One Boundless, Immutable Reality-One Absolute Being-One Creative Principle.   It is All That Is. There is nothing more and nothing less. It is Beginning without time or space.  Each moment-each point is total and complete.  All of Creation is the Absolute manifesting in various forms, densities and dimensions…The vast universes are the body of this Absolute Being.  All things are within It-It is within and conditions all things.  Nothing is separate.   You and I share this Universal Spirit…We are one in Essence.”

This, the Law of One, is primary…from which follow the Laws of Duality, Trinity, the triad of creative principles governing the individualization of Spirit.  From these follow the Great Laws of Economy, Attraction and Synthesis which, according to Theosophy, in turn govern the generation of substance, the association of substance into form as vehicle for spirit and then the dissolution of form and abstraction of individualized spirit into Unity.  The Laws of Numbers, of Manifestation, of Alternation or Cycles, of  Resonance and Correspondence, of Energy and Symmetry, of karma or cause and effect all follow in turn as creative emanations functioning in descending orders of existence. These culminate in systemic laws operating in a universe and to physical laws in local governance.

These laws function within a multi-dimensional reality, the knowledge of which for many, like myself, comes from direct psychic and physical experience.  It is a concept fundamental to metaphysics and is now becoming increasingly validated now by science seeking to understand the nature of matter, mind and paranormal experience.  Existence occurs in many frequencies or formats of energy at once…worlds within worlds…dimensions within dimensions.  Dimensions are energy states defined by a band or octave of frequency or vibration.  It is a pattern or context for the manifestation of energy which gives energy a particular character and imposes limits or boundaries on expression in form. Each has its “axis” of definition…Time+Space=Motion, or Mind+Emotion =  creation.  Consciousness exists in all.  Consequently the dimensions are sometime referred to as the planes of consciousness .

Awareness of multi-dimensional reality is simply “veiled” by the limited frequency sensitivity of the physical senses…essentially a frequency barrier.  By definition the senses measure energy only in the narrow band of the physical dimension.  Man is 3-dimensional, not in the sense of physical space and time, but in terms of the dimensions in which he is conscious: the mental, emotional-astral and physical-etheric energy environment . He is not the body which is a focus in matter, a vehicle in which to act and experience dense material reality.  As man becomes more aware of his existence as Spirit he is becoming four-dimensional  or even more multi-dimensional as contact is made with increasingly more integrated states of being.

The self is experienced in cycles of existence or creation.  Individualized aspects of one Source Creator, we are projected into existence by our own desire to experience ourselves in some context-dimension, descending-involving in diversity, form and density…then ascending-evolving-integrating back into Source-complete.  It is a law of the Conservation of Consciousness that no being, no thought is ever lost in the process of experience. Just as energy is always conserved in any interaction so is consciousness conserved…thought is energy.  The expansion of consciousness is not an increase but an unfolding from a more dense state. Thus in any transformation of being, in any interaction between mind and substance, identity, the Self persists.  The total light is constant.

Man is a Microcosm-a holographic reflection of the Infinite-of totality.   Within the human energy fields, the etheric and auric, are the complete codes and energetics, laws and harmonics, of the entire universe.  These are activated selectively to focus the self into a particular vehicle and can be resonated into activity consciously to self-evolve.  Our purpose is to perfectly express Spirit in Matter, to be the vehicles for God to experience Himself in body.  It is to be creators in matter, co-creators with Source…to become masters, Sacred Architects.

Sacred Geometry reveals the pattern and process of Universal Law…the principles applied in Sacred Architecture.   It is the science of creational formation, the patterns that order creative principles and  energy into manifestation in any dimension.  It is basically the wisdom of relationships. Sacred Geometry is the knowledge of the field patterns and forms corresponding to states of being and of dimension, through which in resonation one may align to a expanded awareness. It maps the way back through the structure and cycles of the universes and dimensions…it is the Path of return…the track of lifetimes in the zodiac.   Each dimension has its characteristic field patterns-frequency bands.  Just as consciousness and thought manifest in form so does the cosmos reflect the Universal pattern.  The application of sacred geometries and numbers in the design of architecture, art, language and ritual, invoked in sacred environment the creative principles and energies to which they corresponded.

“To know God, Nature and Man, one must first know geometry”

                              Pythagoras

The wisdom of Sacred Geometry is fundamental to all the world’s great traditions, taught in its mystery schools, encoded in ancient temples and scriptures.  Yet it lies in fragments, a dismembered science waiting to be re-synthesized by a more enlightened humanity.   Pythagoras taught the ancient sacred science in the “quadrivium”.  Number, geometry, harmony and astrology, these were four of the seven classical liberating arts, which included also language,  and were intended to free the soul from physical to spiritual existence bringing what is now referenced as the left and right  brain into balance:

Number represented both quality and quantity…being the creative principles and measure of reality,  thus giving both meaning and dimension to the design of sacred environment.  This followed the Pythagorean notion that number proceeded existence and were “the source of form and energy”.  Mandala, tetractys, magic squares and the sacred diagrams in ancient traditions were essentially patterns of number…relationship of cosmic law.

Geometry was then the proportional relationship of number in space… the translation of principle into form.  Spirit is related to matter, as the rational is to the irrational, in the language of geometry.  The essential forms of square, triangle and circle, represented, respectively, the principles of  matter, form and spirit or generation, formation and synthesis.  The division of Unity is symbolized in the diagonals of these forms creates proportions to the whole,  √2, √3 and π, known as the transcendentals.  These together with the v5 diagonal of the double square and ø, the Golden Proportion, derived form the diagonal of the 5-sided pentagon, the principle of life, of Man and transformation, as well as from the Fibonacci series, are the basic symmetries needed to define all form in nature and hence the embodiment of Mind in matter. Spirit and matter are brought into geometrical balance in the circling of the square, with circumference equaling perimeter, through a unique triangle, a cross section of the Great Pyramid of Gizeh, in which the Golden Proportion is again the key.  In the harmonic and gnomic progression of these forms spirals emerge as the universal path from chaos to order. The geometry of evolution and enlightenment was encoded in the teaching of the spiral.  In volumes the sacred geometries are embodied in the regular solids, each a special transformation of perfection of the sphere representing cosmic function in their forms, angles, lines and planes.  In Platonic cosmology these geometries were the matrix organizing the original chaos of the elements: fire, air, water and earth representing the dimensions, in order,  of spirit, mind, emotion and the body.  In Hindu the sequence of form defined the descent of spirit into soul and body all within the context of cosmic ideation and manifestation, while in the Kabbala these forms defined the paths relating divine emanations, the Sefiroth, in the progression of involving spirit into matter through the four worlds.

Harmony  relates to the nature of vibration as light and color, sound or music as geometry in time.  Essential principles emerge in the geometrics of the frequencies in the octaves of both light and sound, each color or note, each tone having a characteristic signature and relationship in form evoking emotional response.  The Laws of Alternation, of Reciprocity and Resonance are understood in musical proportion which orders the rhythms of nature and cosmic unfoldment and reflects harmonic structure of natural forms.

Astrology provided the synthesis of geometry in time and space, as reflected in the motions and relationships of the planets and zodiacal signs.  these dynamic patterns translated into the structure of human society as a reflection of grand universal order.

The meaning and purpose of the geometries of sacred environment is encoded within the numbers or principles.  These are evoked in the sacred patterns through the application of measure…the physical units of dimension and movement in time and space.  Measure then gives scale and dimension to sacred environment, relating it in time-space to the whole or the natural world.  In the ancient world the units of measure were fundamental to the order of society.

Volume, weight and even money were derived from linear units of measure which were calculated universally as a specific proportional fractions of the dimensions of Earth measured at the place on the planet where the culture had its religious center. The most common of these were the geophysical foot and cubit, a measure respectively of the circumference of the earth at a given latitude and the distance the earth rotated in a second of time.  Sacred cubits were calculated from polar dimensions.  In the design of sacred environment, particularly the Temple, the application of earth commensurate units of measure, common feet and cubits in the horizontal dimension (relating to earth-matter) and sacred in the vertical (relating to the axis pf Spirit), thus harmonically related man to the earth and spirit in their unique qualities at any given place in the world.   Spatial relationships in sacred environment were designed in whole number values which revealed the corresponding cosmic principles in operation in the space as well as transmitting a teaching of the nature of the universe.

The measure of time also was highly developed in many ancient cultures as evidenced by the sophisticated and highly accurate calendar systems.  Units of time, seconds, hours, days, months, years and age, all reflected principles in their numbers and were calculated as proportional harmonics of the movement of the observable universe.  The calendars thus gave sanction and order to social and ceremonial life, attuning man to the pulse of the cosmos.  The Mayan Tzolkin calendar of 260 days has been shown by Jose Arguelles to encode the “psi bank” mental field of the planet and has a pattern reflecting DNA geometrics. The Hindu temple at Angkor Wat is laid out and proportioned based on the numbers of the cosmic ages, the Yugas.

Measure and proportion in a culture was standardized from a primary unit and universally applied as a Sacred Canon.  As man is a microcosm…the measure of all things these were often a reflection of the human body as a perfect vehicle…the images of Buddha and Hindu deities, for example, had specific proportional requirements.  In ancient Greece and Japan the body was proportioned on eight units while the Egyptian canon was nineteen.  Such proportions in the Temple attunes man to a perfect or divine state of being.  Plato is said to have credited the consistent use of a Sacred Canon to art, language, cities and even social structure in ancient Egypt as the reason the culture persisted for such a long time.

In addition to measure, a knowledge of the forms of the subtle energies of the earth known as Geomancy was applied in both ancient an modern times to relate man to his natural world.  This was both in terms of location in the local landscape and within the larger patterns of grids on the planet and in orientation, the relative direction to important external features.  The geomancer was a healer of the earth, holding the secret knowledge of its energies.  It was his  intention to place and relate man in the context of the world in a state harmony with the elements and the living forces of nature.  In Feng Shui, the Chinese geomancy, this energy was called Chi, life force, the “Dragon paths” whose qualities were both yin and yang.  The balance of these as a they were manifest in the different forms of the landscape (eg. rivers and mountains), or within  personal space such as town and home (eg. materials, paths, objects, walls, openings and plants) assured peaceful existence and good fortune.

There is another form of geomancy that relates man to the energy body of the earth through a system of earth energy grids, vortexes and power points which maintain the flow of vitality in the body of the living planet , Gaia, much as do the meridians and accupressure points of the human body. Evidence of this still sings in the old stones of megalithic ruins, in their strange alignments along ley lines in such diverse places as the Nazca Plain of Peru, New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon, the standing stones and circles, like Stonehenge, in many parts of the globe.  In the geometrics and materials of their design and in their placement within the patterns of earth, the ancient temples collected and combined both earth and extraterrestrial energies, maintaining a balance in nature and making these subtle energies available for the benefit of man, in agriculture, healing and perhaps in communication and transportation.  The existence of these energy patterns as they were “engineered” at  ancient sacred sites and as they exist naturally everywhere is being confirmed by dowsers. The planetary grid system research is correlating both cultural and geophysical features such as plate tectonics, gravitation and magnetic flux and weather patterns to the geometries of these energies which manifest in the regular Platonic solids.

“If the measurement of the Temple is in every way perfect, there will be perfection in the Universe as well”.

                                                                       Mayamata, XXII,92

It is in the design of the Temple, in the creation of sacred space, that the principles of geometry and proportion, of measure and geomancy find their highest expression.  Sacred Architecture is both a field of potent psychic energy to condition an attunement to expanded states of awareness and a vessel…a vehicle for the experience of self in matter.   Through the laws of Correspondence and Resonance its design reflects that of the two temples man is given, his body and his planet, all are the abode of Spirit.   The nature of Sacred Architecture has several aspects as:

Macrocosm:  It is a reflection of Universal order and harmony…of diversity organized in   Unity…the embodiment of truth.  it is a model of the cosmos as structure, as process, and as a relationship of creative principles-universal law in action.  In its design are both the structure of reality and the path to enlightenment.   Within its pattern dualities are balanced…male and female, yin and yang, good and evil expansion and contraction, all dancing in the rhythm of cosmic cycles. This balance is the platform from which attains higher consciousness.

Ancient Temples were based on the cosmological diagrams of the ancient geometers.  Mandalas, yantras, medicine wheels, magic squares, these were essentially schemes of number-relationships of principles within a geometrical field. “Numbers represent creative principles-they are the source of form and energy” (Theon of Smyrana).  This reflected the Pythagorean idea that number preceded manifestation.  The Temple therefore reflected the divine mathematical thought of creation and activated a corresponding pattern in the minds of those experiencing such a sacred space-aligning one to the totality represented in the multi-dimensional pattern.  The Temple then was mandala projected into volume and time into which through meditation and ritual one could enter physically and emotionally as well as mentally. The power of symbol, the objectification of Mind, embodied in sacred space evoked an intuitive cognition ofknowledge and identification with unconditional love.

Nexus:  Sacred environment connects body to Spirit…world to world. In the macrocosm-mandala the dimensions, planes of consciousness, are represented by interwoven volume, surface and line, configuration within configuration, informed by color and patterned in number, geometry and proportion…all experienced in light, sound and touch.  Contact between realities is made in terms of energy states requiring a change in the form and amplitude (power) of vibration.  This connection is the function of Soul…the principle of the Christ.  The Temple is the embodiment of this relationship.  It is that which relates macrocosm to microcosm…the mediation between heaven and earth,  it the lens or gateway… through which Spirit projects into matter.  It is the womb, the chrysalis, for a sacred metamorphosis into divine man.  It is the instrument by which man contacts the higher Self…the alchemical Philosopher’s Stone that catalyzes a sacred transformation.

Anthropocosm:  As the universe is the body of God, so the human body is the vessel of the perfect, divine being…the Anthropos.  Man is the Microcosm… the measure of all things…he embodies the cosmos. Man is the mediation between matter and Spirit, he is Spirit in matter.  “Every living function (every process, organ and limb) is the symbol of an organically realized cosmic function” (Schwaller de Lubicz).  The Temple as body is a pattern that synergizes the parts into the whole…individuals into community…relating all differences and identity into a living Unity.  The design of sacred environment incorporates the pattern of physical man, relating the parts and chakras of the body, as well as of his multi-dimensional nature, relating the body to the emotions, mind and spirit.

Field:   Sacred environment is a resonating field pattern of energies. Temple acts as an antenna, a receptor or wave guide, to assimilate, combine store and re-transmit cosmic and telluric (earth) energies.  It is the Grail.. the sacred vessel from which the mystical elixir, an energy potion, induced a transmutation of matter into spirit.  As the eye and ear are fashioned in form to sense light and sound, so the Temple, in its form, is designed to see and hear a higher vibration.  The resonant environment is generated from the harmonic projection of a seed form or code, such as was the altar, into the enclosure of temple.  Their interaction creates an energy field as exists between the body of man or planet and its respective codes in DNA or the grid system.  In this aspect the temple has an important function in the body of the planet, assisting in the flow of energies into and from  and within the grids.

Ceremony:  Temple embodied the patterns of cosmic process, creation and evolution, as reflected in  rituals and ceremonies.  Worship and initiation, liturgy and dance, the acts of living and loving performed with conscious intent are consciousness conditioning patterns.  The Temple is a reflection of ceremony in dimensional form.  The experience of sacred space as a sequence of events and forms, evokes an attunement to the divine drama and spiritual integration.

“To make this perishable body the abode of the Imperishable…

the Temple of the Mind–

Just as the flower makes its impermanent form the abode of timeless beauty–

This is the task of man.”

                                                                              Lama Govinda

The metaphor of the stargate, a doorway or membrane between light worlds or dimensions, represents the highest aspect of sacred environment.  These gates have specific geometries activated by harmonics unique to each. Their patterns are embodied in the constellations, the geometry of folded space and time and the equations of the ring singularities of infinitely compressed dimension.   What is true of the temple man creates is also for his body…it is a doorway or a lens energized in spiritual practice to experience cosmic reality.  These are the harmonic Ascension modules.

A transformation is at hand, planetary and personal.  Humanity, this planet and its life, are moving through a process of renewal and change…the grids are shifting…we are about to make a quantum leap in evolution of consciousness.  It is time to become the stewards of the planet…the keepers of the earth gates.  It is time to correct the imbalances we have created in the ecology as we have in our own relations.  We are becoming more globally conscious of our responsibilities and true nature as spirit in matter as events like the Harmonic Convergence signify.

We have the opportunity to re-design culture itself as a sacred environment. The principles of transformational design are intended for our homes and our places of work, healing and learning…to make them all centers of transformation.  Many are awakening to this possibility and are creating projects like the Matrimandir in Auroville, India, the Grail at Lindisfarne’s Rocky Mountain Retreat or the small chapel for The Christian Community of Colorado (see following).

Sacred Architecture is more than edifice-it is environment that connects to higher being.  Created though application of number, proportion, geometry Universal Laws and Harmonics.  To create the temple, however, one must first become the Temple…one must contact the sacred within oneself to manifest it outwardly in the world. One must begin to see the Spirit of Place-the sacred in Nature and in all being. To create harmony one must become centered in oneself taking responsibility as Co-creator for the world one lives in.  The creation of Sacred space is an act of the heart not of the Mind.  In this sense Sacred Architecture is a Spiritual Path.
